dark clouds 1 by 200ok.
I commented that the sky looked awesome and I should have brought my camera, so Martin let me try a couple of quick snaps with his phone's camera (a cybershot model).

Port80 crew may be interested to note that's their hotel for WDS07 :)

I *think* this is near where I used to work back in the 90's - there's an Otis building not too far away, if you head over to Darling Harba. Maybe?

Yeah I think there's an Otis building somewhere around here... Fish Markets are just down and left from where I was standing. Corner of Harris Street and Pyrmont Bridge Road, outside Concrete Cafe.

Hey, that's on my way home!

Port80 crew - prepare yourselves: your hotel is also at the geographic epicentre of the great Pen vs. Concrete coffee debate.

Hahah indeed! The port80 crew need to know ahead of time that Concrete is clearly superior, don't let the Pen groupies tell you otherwise :)

Aside from the obvious quality-of-coffee and speed-of-delivery debate, the designer in me all needs to point out that it all depends if you're in the mood for uber-modern concrete interior of (surprise!) Concrete or warm red and wood interior of Pen while you wait for your caffeine fix.

The breakdown as I see it...

Concrete: awesome interior, friendly staff (being a regular probably helps :)), coffee is fast and consistently good. Excellent breakfasts. Open weekends. Will do everything take-away (yes, even cooked breakfast).

Pen: coffee quality is variable, coffee cups have ads on them, staff tend to be impersonal, often a long wait, much bigger range of impulse snacks. Haven't tried their breakfast but the yoghurt etc looks good. Not open weekends.

Neither cafe is open at night, which is a bummer.

We should also mention the wildcard entrant, Cafe Stories from much further up Harris Street. Their main drawcard is mind-bendingly strong coffee, crazy comic artwork fitout and ... well I think we all just like supporting the boys :)

I think the Perth Port80 Posse may need to do a rigorous scientific analysis, involving stringent sampling of the fare of both esteemed establishments in order to determine... ummm... yeah we should try both :)

For the sake of fairness, I will admit that today I finally got a different barista at Pen and my coffee was not burnt.

My allegiance remains with Concrete but at least Pen has proved they can produce something worth buying (even if it is more expensive AND covered in advertising).

For the serious coffee fiends (Five Senses evangelists, I'm looking at you!), a side trip over into the city to Mecca coffee is recommended. It's not "on the way" by any means, more of a mission for the truly addicted ;) I've only had a couple of Mecca coffees, but L goes there all the time and raves about it. Incredibly complex flavour.

I breakfasted at Mecca when in Sydney for WebDU07, It was really good coffee. I found it by chance... I missed a Keynote at WebDU to finish the coffee from Mecca. It is die for...

@NathanaelB Yeah the rooftop does look cool!
