smallegange, titlepage

    See 'smallegange, titlepage' On Black!

An ancient book, which has been in the family for at least 150 years. It's called a 'Smallegange', a sort of encyclopedia of the province of Zeeland by this guy Smallegange who wrote it in and around 1690. This particular copy is from 1696. When I got it it was in a very bad condition and so I had it restored in London. Now it will be good for a couple more centuries. It's a wondeful book with an abundance of pictures, engravings and maps, which I loved leafing through as a boy and to be honest: I still do...

Is this a sort of Chorography of Zeeland?
It seems to me that you try to take a picture of time.Very interesting.

Thanks color line and altweibersommer (hate to call you that...) Hira, what is a chorography? I would call it a kind of encyclopedia. But your notion of taking a picture of 'time' is interesting! Especially in relation to the macro close ups of the cover, I would say! Thanx!

      Beautiful shot, docman.

I was so fascinated I looked up the author online. His full name was Mattheus Smallegange (Born on December 16,1624 and died on January 5, 1710). Most famous for hisNieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland.

WOW! What an incredible book. Great shot capturing both the breadth and antiqueness of the book.

Prachtig! Heeft het de watersnood ramp in Zeeland overleefd, of was het boek toen al ge-emigreerd?

Ja, toen was-ie al lang weg! In Hilversum, geloof ik, in die tijd...
