    People in the Africa south of the Sahara, in the Americas, and in Australia never invented the wheel. This device, one of six simple machines, was unknown on this coast until Europeans brought it with them on ships in the form of blocks, as sailors call pulleys.

    The title of this picture might have been "block and tackle," except that you can't see the tackle, which is the other pulley in the system.
