060223 Saturn
A slightly better Saturn shot than my last one.
Small steps are ok, as long as they are forward...
Best vewed large.

Most EXcellent! Very nice detail and the processing is flat right across the rings. Hard to do.

I agree, your progress is amazing, no matter how small the steps are, you are leaps beyond a lot of us.

I'm speechless!,it's a marvellous astronomical image :)

Thanks!
My setup is an 11" Celestron SCT scope on a Losmandy G11 mount. However, there are 3 secrets to planetary photography:
1. Excellent seeing - you have to wait for a good night. In this case I waited for over a year.
2. modified webcam based video (fancier cameras don't work as well. Here I used a Neximage (essentially a Toucam pro) in which I removed the imaging chip and replaced it with a B&W verion, and firmware to force it to output RAW video instead of the Bayer color filter array conversion.
3. Final secret. Collect 5000 video frames and use special software (Registax) to sort through these frames and select the best 10% or so for stacking.
Thats probably more than you wanted to know...

What telescope have you used for those very fine shots of Saturn and else?
Chase Davis (70 months ago | reply)
So putting my camera to my telescope lens isnt going to work, makes me feel better, thats how i do it for the moon, this is a great image.
dgoodin (70 months ago | reply)
No, but doing the video thing is not as hard as you think and its rewarding. A stock Neximage camera ($99) is all you need (and a computer of course). The software (registax) is free (or nearly so for the latest version).
