The Incredible Hulk and Hogwarts Castle

The Incredible Hulk and Hogwarts Castle

Just got back from spring break in Orlando... Absolutely awesome trip with friends. Anyways, I only had my iPhone camera, but I discovered this pretty slick app, Instagram, and I was playing around with the filters. This shot was taken underneath the Incredible Hulk Coaster with Hogwarts Castle in the distance. The colors are modified, but the lens flare is real.

Sociology of Disability - Bloomberg School of Public Health

This is a short video documentary feature that I did for my class, Sociology of Disability. Our task was to assess the accessibility of the Bloomberg School of Public Health for students with disabilities. My group and I took two separate filming trips from the Homewood campus to the school of public health. Big thanks to Dylan for volunteering to be in the wheelchair, Brittany for pretending to be blind, and Erika for helping me edit this video.

Note: The over-dramatic theme and subtext were added on purpose just to lighten the whole project up a bit. :)

All film was shot using a Canon 7D and edited in iMovie '11.

Medicine Rising to New Heights - Part III

Medicine Rising to New Heights - Part III

The new Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland will open in 2012. This new state-of-the-art hospital has 205 beds and features a 21st century technological design for pediatric care.

One of the most striking features of the new hospital is the color choice for the window panes. Designed by installation-artist Spencer Finch, all of the 6x7 color panels consist of 26 different selected nature colors from Claude Monet’s Water Lily paintings. Additionally, hand made paintbrush strokes (instead of computer created geometric frits) were etched into one layer of the glass and sandblasted on the other to further enhance the symbolic relationship between glass, water, and light.

One of the new technologies that will be featured in the children's center that I've personally had the opportunity to work on as an undergraduate at Hopkins is the infrared tracking system for medical equipment. The complex infrastructure of a large hospital often results in misplaced equipment or medicine, which can lead to complications or other medical errors. This new technology places infrared trackers on equipment which can communicate with sensors built into the ceiling throughout the hospital and allow medical professionals to know where things are at all times through a secure network. Initial pilot testing in the JHMI Weinberg Perioperative Surgical Suites showed very promising results.
