A Bit of Climbing

A Bit of Climbing

All of this rock that we saw on this trip and we only saw climbers on this one day. At the top of this rock these two guys had 3 or 4 buddies that were already at the top. For some reason a number of them were wearing wild colored wigs.

While in boy scouts many years ago we did a number of climbing adventures. It was a ton of fun and something I'd love to do again but suspect I may need to work on the upper body strength and lose a little weight. For some reason I never see obese climbers... lol

Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock

Probably one of the easiest formations to get to in Arches. You pull off, park, and pretty much there you are. There are a ton of angles to get. Sort of behind me are a bunch of rocks similar in size and shape as the ones in the foreground here. They also helped make interesting images but I was on a withered tree look when editing so this won out on the edits.

During my presentation about this trip I talk about how erosion over time has made these formations and that someday gravity will win. Balanced rock is a classic example of this. It's pretty awe inspiring as you think about it.

Window Part II

Window Part II

I guess I shouldn't upload this one so soon after the other Window shot but I kind of liked it as well so what the hey. I honestly think this shot is more, lets say journalistic. It's more true to what you would see if you were there. Not that the previous shot had anything faked. The previous shot was just more of an angle issue.

If you notice the gray bush towards the middle left it's the same one from the previous shot...

I'll add that I was really going for the "glow" of light around the inside of the window. I never really got that look from what I was shooting. The highlighted sky in the middle of the window sort of pulls the eyes away from the glow.

The Tree That Kept Calling Us

The Tree That Kept Calling Us

The tree in this shot was probably shot by Tim, Dave and myself at almost every angle possible. The ground around the area was slick rock and I know that Dave and I both ended up laying on the ground for at least one angle. In the end this shot worked out the best for me.

A number of previous shots were HDR... want to guess if this one is? If you said it wasn't you'd be right but it's really pretty obvious with the darker areas.

Arches A Plenty!

Arches A Plenty!

I played with this shot a number of times but eventually got it sort of right. It's about 180 degrees from the south windows shot. It too is an HDR as I wanted to try and get more of the sky. I think if I shot around 7 +/- stops of shots this may have been a bit richer in depth but I just did three images at +/- 2 stops.

Later in the day we swung by real quick to see if the double arch (it's there but you kind of have to know where since it's not real obvious) was in better light so we could get a better shot. It wasn't. So we didn't stop. I have to believe that it's simply a matter of the time of year. Meaning if we lived in the area in the summer or winter it would be an incredible shot but while we were there it just wasn't going to happen.
