Mt. Illampu, Bolivian Andes

Mt. Illampu, Bolivian Andes

In 1973 I went to Bolivia and shot seven documentaries on the Aymara Indians. All the films centered around life in the village of Vitocota, at 14,000 feet elevation. I was there for four months and all my Bolivia photos are from that trip. All shots were from an old Pentax on Ektachrome film.
Mt. Illampu is Bolivia's 4th highest peak at 20,890 ft.

That's me dancing at film director Hube's birthday party. We were awakened that morning at sunrise by the sounds of a squealing pig being slaughtered at our front door. It was cleaned out, rubbed with red peppers and roasted in a brick oven. It was served at this party and man, it was good. We were honored that they would sacrifice a pig for us.

Living in the village was at a subsistance level. There literally was not enough food there to feed us, so we stayed in the Mestizo town of Ayata about two miles away. We walked to the village in the morning, carrying all of our equipment, shot until darkness, then walked home. Boy, did I get in great shape.
In the town of Ayata, we stayed in the home of this man.
