You Gotta Find Your Deathstar

Day 155 of 365 (Year Three)

Fanboys came out on DVD last week. I had already seen it in the theaters (luckily it had finally spread to MD), but I wanted to see it again and Kathy had yet to see it. She's not nearly the geek I am, but she has a healthy appreciation for all things Star Wars and did want to see it as well.

There is a particular scene in the movie where one of the characters, Eric, is at a crossroads. Go back home and continue working for his dad in a job he hates or defy his father and follow his dream. He is at a crossroads and Hutch tells him that he has got to find his Deathstar. While Hutch's definition of what exactly he means by it is, for me, a bit limited it is still a great line. When I first heard it I was reminded of the line from City Slickers where Curly tells Billy Crystal's character what the meaning of life is. That it is just one thing and leaves it at that. That one thing, or in this case, the Deathstar, is different for everyone, but it is that one thing that helps define your life and reason for being. I've heard this same thought expressed many different ways, but I really appreciated hearing translated to "geek."

I don't know that I necessarily believe that there is any one thing, over the course of a lifetime, that can fully define one's life. There are so many events that occur over a lifetime that narrowing it down to a single event seems limiting to me. Rather, I think there are several events that, over a lifetime, help define the course of a life and the individual. Yes Luke found his Deathstar, but you have to remember, they rebuilt the Deathstar and Luke once again found his life altered and redefined by that second Deathstar.

Neato! I love the starry background! I'm waiting for Fanboys in my Netflix queue, I'll watch it soon. I've never been much of a Star Wars fan, but since Flickr I've hung out with so many members of the 501st, that I can't help but feel involved!
