I really like this photo! There is just something about a dome that is so magical..!
Maybe it's because it was a masterpiece of creation durring it's time..
The unheard of concept of a circular dome roof over a square base....brilliant!

I love the light coming through the windows. You have great details in and on the walls...
      Most beautiful!

Thank you, Loretta! Without a doubt St Peter's is an incredible structure - and so freakin' huge! - the lettering underneath the dome, for example, is 2 metres (6.5 feet) high!! ;)

      ...Staggering!!!

...However, as taken aback and all as I was by the Basilica, it was the neighbouring, and far far tinier, Sistine Chapel which rendered me absolutely speechless! (It's part of the very interesting, and massive, Vatican Museum; I recommend the guided tour - actually, we had a charming and knowledgeable art student for Canada as our guide).

One last thing, though: apparently, the Sistine Chapel is the scene of the most pocket-picking in the world... what with hundreds of tranced tourists staring at the ceiling for minutes a time! ;)

Your picture really show this massive structure. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to the Sistine Chapel, as I didn't want to queue for hours. Next time it will be.

      Thanks Karim!

We didn't have to queue for long at all (in fact, we queued only once: initially to get into St Peter's). Mind you, we took the tour around the Basilica, and then partook of the option to extend the tour into the Museum which culminated with the Chapel.

Of course, it was also might have something to do with the fact it was Jan 5th??? ;)
