What size pans did you use?

I used a 9 x 13 pan for the base (I used 2 of them and had whipped ganache filling) and a 5 or 6" square french vanilla with a raspberry buttercream (pink for girl!) filling.

Thanks! It's super-duper cute!! I'm doing a version of it for an order in November... the customer loved this cake when she saw the pic, but she doesn't need as much cake, so we're gonna do a 10" round on bottom and the 6" square on top... putting the words on the cake board! Thanks for the fabulous inspiration!!

so thats all you do to reveal the sex? make the filling pink or blue depending on which?
hobbycakesbyjan 15 months ago | reply
You can either do that or bake a cake that's got pink or blue food coloring in it. My friend wanted the icing to tell the story so that's what I did. I will say this...if you do the filling thing, make sure the dam of regular buttercream you put around the filling before putting on the next layer of cake is not TOO thick! My friend and her husband cut into the corner of the cake and first only saw white buttercream! They had to cut in a little deeper. It was funny but imagine their surprise!

Great cake! I'm also doing one for a friend who saw your cake and loved it! I had a couple questions that I was wondering if I could email to you?

So when we find out the sex.. do we make a white cake and use food colouring to make it pink or blue for a boy? and then decorate the cake like you did with fondunt
hobbycakesbyjan 5 months ago | reply
Whitneyp502...You can color the cake part if you want...or use a colored filling like I did on the 'gift' cake (I used a raspberry buttercream filling for a pink color). The cake is all buttercream...I only used fondant for the decor...gumpaste for the big bow on top.
