That lamp has legs.jpg

    DPS Assignment: Light/Play

Another week, another trip to the shops to buy props - and props that then get a proper butchering with a saw!!! Wanted to literally play with light and do what I'm sure my Dad would tell me not to do - play with electricity! Probably my most uncomfortable pose to date with the bulb literally pressed against my nose. But it's always worth the pain to get the shot you want. Think I may return to my "inside the mind of a lampshade" pose as the nights draw in and the sun says goodbye until Spring.

I need to get a word in edgeways before Leisa comes back again!!! Thanks one and all for your comments. Had such fun taking this shot - think it's probably one of my faves so far. When I have time to play with a set up I go wild. Ape boy - yes it's fun how the wall on the left is lit by daylight and is therefore blue and the wall on the right is glowing in the yellow of tungsten! In terms of going off-centre, I was going to sit in the corner but then really fancied a straight down the middle shot. I did include the sofa on a few attempts but preferred the simplicity of just me, the shade, the wire and that's about it. But will definitely play some more with this set up. Have lots of other ideas I want to try. Going to be hard from the outback though! But thank you thank you for all your suggestions and to the husband too. And to my husband for loving me even though I am totally weird!

      you said it...

    10. yo_ashnish (57 months ago | reply)

Wow! Now theres an idea!! I love it! though I couldn't imagine having a light bulb, lit up, pressed up against my nose! Ouch! But then, like you said, it is worth it when you get the shot you wanted :D Fabulous!

    19. Isilwen (57 months ago | reply)

Whilst sitting up at 3am feeding my infant, a memory of seeing this picture jumped back into my head. I keep imagining what it would look like without the natural light and just the tungsten glowing around you. Could just be that I'm a symmetrical kind of girl, not sure. The daylight detracts from the picture for me. If you have a chance to play with it some more or if you've already got a version of this shot as I described, I'd love to see it.

That aside, it's a brilliant shot! Your creativity (and will to sit with a lit bulb against your nose) amazes me.

wow, what a photograph! Love that dress - let me know when you have finished with it! I blame the parents - can't think what they did to make you so weird. Sure they love you to bits though

Thank you so, so much everyone. Really appreciate your comments and suggestions. The floorboards and the wallpaper are a godsend for photos - I just love the way the light always plays off the wood - particularly when you shoot low-angle along the boards. Thanks Isilwen for your suggestion about cutting out the natural light and just going tungsten - I guess I'd have to throw light across the floor though with a lamp to keep the same sort of look - otherwise overall there wouldn't be much light in frame - cos although the bulb was against my nose it was only 25W - think a 100W might burn my face off! My outfit is a white skirt and halterneck top - I love white clothes for their simplicity in photos - they feel timeless. Fstopshere - yes this assignment took months of preperation - observing other lampshades and slowly learning their ways! And thanks Sybren - that's cool - thank you for the screenshot - most kind. Given this reaction I am going to have to play the role of other popular household items!

I think your daily commentaries are thoughtfully delightful. Must say you reminds me of myself. Stop the bus! This woman
is reminded of herself......oh how I hope she isn't one of those
365 'groupies I've heard about, like the little birds that like to hang out on a hippo's back. Save me from another chattering companion. My head is allreadyl filled up with my OWN committees. Another Greek chorus, I don't need. Ha Ha.

I was out 'surfing' and came across you and hubby out front with signs written on pieces of paper. You are a scream. You are Very delightful, and I'll bet you come with a full refund if not satisfied. Just thought I would say HEY, on my way through. You have made my day, just a lot richer. THANKS> KEEP IT UP. Carry on citizen. Peace, KAT....(Me, smiling)
