A Rideau Canal Christmas

Christmas and city lights are reflected in Ottawa, Canada's famous Rideau Canal, a Unesco World Heritage site and, when winter eventually arrives, the world's longest skating rink.

A Touching Tribute*

A Touching Tribute*

In late 2010, early 2011, I had the privilege of working as a graphic designer on architect Daniel Libeskind's memorial to the doomed passengers of the M.S. St. Louis. The ship, loaded with 937 Jews left Europe in 1939 seeking refuge from the impending war. They were denied entry into the U.S., Cuba and Canada before returning to Europe where about 1/3 of the passengers were murdered in the Holocaust. "None is too many," declared Canada's then minister of Immigration in reference to the Jewish passengers.

Among my contributions to the memorial was the design of the back which displays the names of all 937 passengers on the ship. Pictured above at the memorial's unveiling, an elderly Holocaust survivor locates the name of his sister, a passenger on the M.S. St. Louis.

Libeskind's memorial is on permanent display at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The story of the ship was told in the 1976 movie Voyage of the Damned starring Faye Dunaway.

Note: Architect Daniel Libeskind is currently designing the new World Trade Center towers in New York City.
