Grant Palmer's stalwart Mercedes 709 / Alexander G572 PRM is seen here departing from the company's outstation at Upper Sundon on 15th January 2012 on it's way to it's new preservation home with the Barrow Transport Museum Trust. The vehicle had been earmarked for preservation for several years and this departure was the culmination of negotiations that had been ongoing since 2009. It's departure marks somewhat of an end of an era for Grant Palmer who has now ceased to operate any Mercedes 709's, with only two seatbelted Varios left in service for school contract work and emergency cover as necessary. Mercedes were the core of the fleet for many years since bus service work was started in 2001.
572 was purchased by Palmer from Stagecoach North West via Rochdale based dealer Houston Ramm in January 2002, it's simple and rugged engineering ensured it outlasted many other vehicles in the fleet, only being withdrawn in December 2011 when it's regular contract service between Dunstable and Harpenden was given up. In it's time with Stagecoach it served at Barrow and Lancaster among other places, and the Trust hope to restore the vehicle to unusual black Lancaster 'Uni Sprint' livery.
