Moaning Cavern, Calaveras County, California. Sunday rolls around, and I'm looking for something different to do. So far most of my galavanting has been through trees, mountains and coastline (I've largely avoided prairies and desert because of the heat). Going off a brochure, I thought I would check out one of the local underground caves. Alas, turns out there are only a handful of caverns in the entire state of California -- the state largely lacks the limestone karst topography that is necessary for cavern formations. But there are a few, three or four of which are located in the southern Sierra gold region near Sonora and Jackson. October 7, 2007. Photo #1 of 76 of my 'Moaning Cavern' photoset.
