The Time Jumper’s Confusion and his Identity Shift

The psychologist interrupted the colleague she was traveling with to say that time didn’t truly exist in the unconscious mind. Many people assign their dreams to the past, because some of their dream actions have clearly taken place in the past; others in turn assign them to the future, because some dream events since then have come true.

She waited until the train with its screeching wheels came to a stop at the station, and then completed her argument by saying that there was an area of the psyche in which time plays no role.

"Our psyche is truly a timeless place," she said.

Her psychologist colleague felt misunderstood, because although he had no objection to her statements, he felt more interested in whether it were possible to gage time in a dream.

"Ah," she said. "You mean, to get a sense of the duration of time in a dream?"

After she had confirmed her understanding, she added that this sense of dream time was deceptive. Only after she had awakened from her usual nap of twenty minutes would she frequently discover that from her sense of the dream, she would have estimated that it took a whole hour.

"As I said, Dali created numerous pictures that show clocks--and therefore also time--in the process of dissolution. Beyond the reality of everyday life, in the realm of the surreal, other structural laws prevail. "

Her colleague then asked a specific question that related to her newly acquired position as the head of a sleep laboratory, by returning to a case which she had described in a paper at the Psychology Club.

A man had dreamt that he jumped behind a screen, and that that the wind had then wrested it from him. He landed on a small rocky island, which turned out to be an island of timelessness. On this island, he watched the various stages of his life pass before his eyes; the longer stayed on the island, the more he lost a sense of who and what he is right now.

"He felt connected with all time and all existence," said the psychologist, "and woke up with a feeling completely disoriented, which he continued to feel throughout the entire day."

He consulted her by phone, and she asked him to stop thinking about what time it was then or what it might be, but to focus on his current mental state--to focus on simply observing the moment.

"Empty your mind," she said, and "Do not look beyond being in the here and now. Turn your mind from trying to understand to simple observation. "

"The mind’s tendency toward analytical thinking certainly creates this type of problem," her colleague said.

"Yes," replied the psychologist. "Timelessness is peaceful, and from it you can observe everything. Problems only arise when the observing stops and thinking begins. This is what caused his disorientation: the search for ‘Who am I really?’

“And in fact I am truly everything. But that’s my experience when I'm in a state of witnessing. As long as I'm searching, I'm always fragmented and merely identified with a subpersonality.
That was the man’s problem. He no longer knew who he really was. We have been working for several months because the shifting moods that his inner observer sees could become part of his whole personality. This would bring him a shift from identifying with merely one fragment to wholeness."
