Facet browser/collector

The idea is that the user can select a category, sub-category or item... but also navigate through the tree. So, if 'Category 1' is EU, they can select that or click the link to bring up EU member countries in column 2. They can then check one of those countries or click a link to bring up the appropriate cities in column 3. All selections are listed in the the fourth column.

The small click area for the checkbox worries me. I'm wondering if there's an obvious solution I'm missing that provides a similar level of 'flow'.
