After posting that last image of Dakota, I'm sure that my reasons for being drawn to Daisy Dog are even more evident. Same glossy black coat, same soulful eyes, same kindness.

in rememberance

in rememberance

I have known dogs - the weight
of their heads in my lap.
Their hearts that beat and slow
and beat and slow and stop.
Their final sighs. The way we stroke
their heads to say goodbye.

Another from the archives, but for a very good reason. Today would have been Dakota's birthday - he was my family's farm dog for 14 years. It's been over two years since he left this world, but I never forget his birthday. I miss him often.

This was taken with possibly the first roll of slide film I ever used. I had heard about slide film, read about it, but when the lab asked me about processing I insisted on prints, not slides. I didn't realize they would turn out with a very, very strong blue cast... how embarrassing. Granted, I was just a teenager at the time, and had no instruction in photography other than the books I devoured on the topic.

And also? This was taken the morning after an ice storm. Those chunks of white on the ground are pieces of ice that had been wrapped around tree branches and limbs. Eventually (with much crackling and sudden crashing) all the ice came to the ground, creating an unreal landscape. Dakota was kind enough to pose for me (he was always kind).

Yes, another from the archives. This one is 2-3 years old, if memory serves, and features my friend Erik in Oaks Bottom on Worldwide Pinhole day.

Thank you for all the kind comments regarding the "older" images. I guess they make me slightly self conscious. Many of them (not this one, though) were scanned from original prints, which I've found very much inferior to scanning negatives. Some were also taken on slide film, which I've found notoriously difficult to scan... the slides themselves look fantastically beautiful, but it's difficult to get that to translate onto Flickr.

Anyway, hoping to catch up on your streams and on my Flickr emails tonight!

a frenzy of goats

a frenzy of goats

I know, I know... I just posted an image... what, an hour ago? And now I'm posting again. It's because in combing though my postable images, I've realized how many old (over 3-4 years old) images there are. These photos have languished, never seeing the light of Flickr, because they either 1) never struck my fancy on a particular day, or 2) had flaws that kept them from being posted, but had attributes that kept them in that limbo land.

This one, for instance. It was taken while at my first veterinary job here in Oregon, so at least 3.5 years ago. It's not in focus. It's fuzzy. But, do you see those goats? Do you see that fellow on the right, how he uncoils like a spring into the image, his ears flying wildly? Or that old, impressive buck standing solidly by in the background? And of course, the center of attention himself, airborne. So, you know... I'm posting it today. And I think I'll be sharing a number of old images from this point on, even if it means posting one image after another.

Image made with a Nikon FM (I think.)
