Okay, I found it. It's called Baptisia austalis, or False Indigo - a perennial they say is a good substitute for lupins, so Philip, you were on the right track. Thanks everyone. Some of the images I've just found for it show much less flower and a whole lot more leaves, but these are much more like lupins, with sweetpea type flowers. Very pretty if you need something for a sunny garden.

These are chickens kept at Riverdale Farm in the heart of downtown Toronto. They have loads of space to wander and this guy shows up all over the farm. I know it looks like a cage, but it's a fence just to keep them enclosed - they freely go outside to a big grassy area and it's a city park/farm where they are well cared for. There were eggs sitting in one of the nesting areas and the rooster was roaming around eyeing the girls!
