Acleris cristana.

Acleris cristana.

This is my first moth of the year, found in a Pets at Home warehouse 2 weeks ago. But still not seen one since! It has distinctive raised scale 'tufts' on the middle of each forewing and although a variable moth I haven't seen this form before! Andover, Hampshire, UK. 2012-01-11.

Variable Longhorn Beetle (Stenocorus meridianus).

Variable Longhorn Beetle (Stenocorus meridianus).

As it's common name suggests this beetle can vary in colour from the more common all [or mostly] black to the reddish/brown form I found here at Green Lane Wood Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, UK. 2011-06-13

This amazing longhorn beetle has the longest antennae in relation to it's body size [the male at least] of any insect in the UK. Each antenna is 3" [7.5cms] long!! Found during an entomological trip to Scotland in May last year. Caledonian Pine Woods, Abernethy area, Scotland, UK. 2011-05-21.

Timberman Beetle (Acanthocinus aedilis)♀.

Timberman Beetle (Acanthocinus aedilis)♀.

The female has shorter antennae - but they are still impressive. This species is only found in old relict pine forests in Scotland in the UK, and occasionally as an adventive in imported timber elsewhere in the UK. Found during an entomological trip to Scotland in May last year. Caledonian Pine Woods, Abernethy area, Scotland, UK. 2011-05-21.
