Jumping Spider

    A Jumping Spider(Salticidae)
Jumping Spiders don't build webs to catch prey, but instead chase bugs down and jump on them! They can literally snatch a fly out of mid air. There are over 5000 species of jumping spider, this LOOKs like it may be Phidippus Audax (Bold Jumpers). But I wouldn't stake my life on it. Spider experts say that to properly identify a spider they frequently have to put it under a microscope.

This fat little spider was very shy, which is unusual for Salties. But I finally managed to get it to pose for me.

It is a Bold/Daring Jumping Spider (Phidippus Audax). I love these guys, they're all around and seem to be the only things left to photograph now that winter is approaching.

Thanks for the confirmation! In Texas we still have a few other spiders around in October, but the numbers are dropping rapidly.

i've met several of these in my lifetime, and they are very curious spiders! they are inquisitive, and would explore my hand, jump off, look at me and then follow my finger around.

Jumping spiders do seem to be the friendliest of all the arachnids! Not that they would hesitate to eat you if they could. :)

Amazing shot!! I have one living on the side of my front door, amazing how jumping spiders are actually pretty cute, especially if you watch their behavior... Kinda like 8 legged teddy bears that suck the life out of little buggies. I love it when they actually turn their heads to look at you... crazy!!

You've got to be happy about getting this on the Phidippus audax wikipedia article along with Opo Terser's pic!

Oh thank you! I just had one of these little guys in my dining room, and I chased the poor fellow for a while taking pictures of him before I carried him outside. I loved the way he'd sit up and look at me. My camera isn't great though -- I should pull the photos up and see if I got anything.

I was trying to identify the species, and the white spot on the butt and the green mandibles (?) look right. I don't know west coast spiders very well-- I grew up back east where I played with Spiny Micranthas. My mum thought I was nuts.

Glad I could help. Spider Identification is often a very inexact science BUT, the Bold Jumpers are apparently pretty easy to recognize. So your little fellow is probably the same species as the one above.

Let me know if you post your pics of the little salty!

This picture of the jumping spider is awesome! I'm an amateur photographer myself, I don't have anything posted on flickr, (yet) just on facebook. I was trying to figure out what some of the spiders around the house were when I found your picture. I was looking for P. audax so I took the name as a handle. I'd really like to print a copy to hang in my room here in Penllyn, PA.
Is there any chance you would forward me the original full size file via email so I could print an 8 x 10?

I'm glad you liked the pic! Let me know if the full resolution version doesn't arrive via email and I'll just upload it to an image site for you. Unfortunately, I'm afraid you may be a bit disappointed since full resolution is not a lot bigger for this pic. sorry. :(

Feh, didn't see your reply for months! Thank you!

For what it's worth, I posted my pictures here:

I do not have a great camera, but good enough to be fairly sure of the species. Is it strange to find an arachnid adorable? Your photo really captures the way this kind seems to peer right back at you.

Your photos are very nice! Thanks for sharing!

If you still needed a copy of the full resolution pics, I've uploaded them here:
