Heaton Park Blackpool Tram Day 21 Nov 2010. Car 31 is a Marton Box car which dates back to 1901 - or at least the three full size bays did. Originally a 4 wheel car with windscreens - it was later fitted with a top cover. 1919 saw a considerable rebuild, with a new underframe and bogies. The lower saloon was extended with the bulkheads moved out and half bays fitted at each end. The windscreens went - as did the top deck. A new top deck was fitted in 1928 - these rebuilds (27, 29, 30, 31 and 32) predating the Standard cars of 1923-1929 which replaced the other ten box cars. 3 became works car 4 (later 754) in 1934 (open top once more) and was preserved in 1984 and restored by Beamish by 1988. This winter it is visiting Heaton Park and starred alongside visiting 706 and resident, works car 752 and Vanguard 619 on the Blackpool Tram Day. It contrasts with PD3 529, 67 years its junior at Whitegate tram stop.
