Intensive colored Iris_wbs_5576
Another blue one in our garden.
The flower of the rainbow
The iris has its origins in the Greek pantheon. It was named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow, which mediated between the gods and humans. Their symbol was the rainbow as a bridge between heaven and earth. This mediating function is also reflected in the structure of a typical iris flower which is made up of six petals: three petals, which are often referred to as Dome-petals point heavenward, the other three, sometimes called the hanging sheets that show more or less clearly downward. They represent the connection between earthly and heavenly world. Even with the small, spring flowering bulbs such as iris Iris reticulata (see above!) and Iris bucharica this striking floral structure is clearly visible.
