Pittsburgh Iron & Steel Heritage Collection
|
In October, 2008 Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh received a National Leadership Demonstration Grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to enable Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh to digitally preserve about 500,000 pages of historic materials related to the Pittsburgh and the iron and steel industry and to make them available to the public.
Dating as far back as the 1800s, much of the collection is too fragile to handle. By saving Pittsburgh’s steel and iron legacy materials in a digital format, the library can make them accessible to local students as well as national historians.
This Flickr collection represents a small selection of the 500,000+ pages that were digitized. We invite the Flickr community to view, comment, and share this collection. To learn more about the collection, Pittsburgh Iron & Steel Heritage Collection, please visit our Web page.
