This photograph of a group of German prisoners gives an impression that they are exhausted to the point of indifference at their circumstances. They are being escorted through a ruined village by three British soldiers, two in front with rifles and fixed bayonets and one behind. Some of the men have been wounded and one is being carried, with his damaged leg wrapped in what looks like a table cloth or a curtain.
Contemporary accounts suggest that the treatment of prisoners on both sides ranged from civilised to barbaric, often dependent on the temperament of individual officers, or the effect of rumours concerning the treatment meted out by the other side.
