Where Tommy's footwear is repaired
This view of the corner of a workshop for repairing army boots shows men using machines to mend calf-length boots. The machines have the logo and brand name of the American Singer Company, who produced both domestic sewing machines and larger industrial machines such as these, for sewing leather and canvas.
The men look very solemn, but the blackboard behind them bears the rhyme, 'Some want B . Some want tea. Give me 'Green Em .' suggesting that there were light-hearted moments in the workshop.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. Where Tommy's footwear is repaired. This big shop on the Western Front renovates 30,000 pairs a week. At work stitching.']
