Yeah, it's touristy, but I'm pretty sure it's also an international crime not to try your hand at surfing when visiting Hawaii. Waikiki is way too crowded and not that great of a beach, but it is well set up for surfing neophytes.
I spent 6 days exploring Oahu since I'd never been Hawaii. Getting off the beaten path was great. It wasn't surf season, so the beautiful North Shore beaches were practically deserted. I stayed at a great hostel just 1/2 block off Waikiki...with a Starbucks just around the corner. :) Prime location for $22 a night, plus the chance to meet some cool people? That's my kind of deal!
