Binnen het boeddhisme is Maitreya (Pali: Metteyya) de toekomstige Boeddha.
Maitreya is een bodhisattva, die volgens sommige boeddhisten uiteindelijk op aarde geboren zal worden, verlichting zal bereiken en een pure dhamma zal onderwijzen. Maitreya Bodhisattva wordt de opvolger van de historische Sakyamuni Boeddha.
