Genesee Valley Canal Tunnel, Unfinished, Letchworth State Park
This tunnel was supposed to take miles off of the canal route around the unstable Letchworth Gorge, but unfortunately the rock was too unstable for a tunnel also, and it collapsed. Work was stopped, the tunnel was abandoned and the canal was completed on a ledge around the gorge. When I first saw this tunnel in 1990, it was about half covered by rock which has collapsed over the entrance, and it had bars over it to keep people out. Today this is all that is visible, in fact you cannot see this from the trail and you have to climb approximately 30 feet up a rock pile to glimpse the entrance. Another rock cave in will probably hide this away for good.
