Displaced by the conflict in Gao, Mali

“Without food, our family would not survive. I thank the UK for helping me and my children in our time of need. Many, many thanks!”

Hawa Maiga, 45, is just one of thousands of people that have been directly affected by this crisis. Britain and others countries are working hard to ensure everyone that needs help receives it.

Hawa comes from Gao, one of Mali’s northern towns that has been acutely affected by conflict in recent times. Even in February this year, violent clashes occurred between rebel fighters and French and Malian forces, making life in Gao unbearable.

“I really want to return to my home but I cannot", she says. Fighting is continuing, even to this day - it is too dangerous. The protection of my loved ones is my only priority.”

Out of approximately 61,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) that are currently registered in Bamako, WFP is helping support 12,000 of the most vulnerable.
