Clyde, the 1966 El Camino

Clyde, the 1966 El Camino

Well, here is my dad's 1966 El Camino Custom. It is one of 24,337 produced. It was restored in December of 2000 and painted by Sharpe's Body Shop. The original color was a very uninspiring beige, called Cameo Beige. We decided to repaint it an original 1966 Chvrolet color called Madeira Maroon Metallic. The two-tone fawn interior is original for this car and goes pretty darn well with the Madeira Maroon. It was built in the 2nd week of July, 1966 in Fremont, California and shipped to Bill Barnett Chevrolet in Compton. It was purchased in August by the Mendez family for $2,504.00 and has been in that family from 1966 to 2000, when we purchased it. It was in storage for 15 years. It is equipped with the original, numbers matching, 195 h.p. 283 with the rare and complete Air injection Reactor system, required for all 1966 California cars. The original 2-speed powerglide was replaced by a TH-350 which bit the dust earlier in 2008 at a weekly cruise-in at Tony's Hot Rod Hoagies. We then replaced that with a J.W. Performance TH-350 and a 2,400 r.p.m. stall converter. The 2 1/2 inch Flowmaster exhaust system makes it sound really mean and the 14x7 Cragars add to that overall "cool" look.
