Achensee morning

It's great to get above the clouds on mornings like this and to leave the gloom of the valley.
Geek notes...I am trying to master focus stacking and blending them, with mixed results. This is an example and has one exposure focused on the grasses, then the tree, then the sky etc...you probably know the technique. It seems to work better with a portrait format, which of course gives more depth, and also with light conditions which aren't changing quickly. It certainly improves the foreground but blending can give some problems where trees poke into the sky etc. I know some of you do this brilliantly well, so I'd like to hear your experiences.

Yes. This is very beautiful. Focus merging is tough. (I have one posted recently of an iris patch). The blend is difficult if you don't have a clear boundary. Sometimes a mask made from luminosity differences can help refine the selection (and added to the mask), when you have a raggedy boundary. Do you use a push button program or do it manually on PS? Sometimes I use edit/distort/scale to change the size of the near focus exposure as there is a magnification difference. I never do more than two exposures. All in all post is time consuming. But it's worth it if the scene is wonderful and the technique is opaque, as it is here.

Walking along...thanks for the info. Yes I do this manually, being unaware of push buttons. I've not yet found too much problem with the magnification differences as most of my landscapes have a fairly 'fussy' foreground which doesn't show this up. I have used more than two exposures at times, but things can get a bit confusing. The other thing which I wonder about is whether our eyes/brain actually benefit from seeing a shot with everything in clear focus????.. given that in reality, we don't. Anyway, I like the result from a technicalpoint of view, although with more 'arty' shots it doesn't always matter if some areas are out of focus or exposed incorrectly. Thanks for the thoughts.
