Submitted For Your Consideration
Exactly a month ago today hastingsgraham posted her Serling photo at www.flickr.com/photos/31472241@N03/4505755150/ and I knew as soon as I saw it--or no later than halfway through my comment--what my next one was going to have to be and pretty much exactly how it was going to be. I was already working on the Kenneth Arnold one then so it had to wait, but I'm always willing to extend my little vacations to Weirdsville whenever I can. Thanks, Jessica!
Other than that, no real back story, just a tribute to the creator of one of, if not THE, greatest tv shows ever, no matter what Steven King thinks!

Thanks for the compliment, and thanks again for the inspiration, Jessica!
Thanks as well, GORDO-8. That was a great episode, and one of the few things I've actually found funny on tv in the last decade or two (or is that geological era or two?) was the last episode of "3rd Rock From the Sun". Shatner plays the Great Leader (or whatever he was called) and he comes to Earth to visit "the family". One of them asks how his trip was and he says it was terrible--his space ship broke down and he had to take a commercial flight from New Jersey, and all the way to Ohio there was some little creature out on the wing tearing up the engine. John Lithgow does a double-take and says, "Really?!! The same thing happened to ME once!!!" I had forgotten until then that he had played that part in the movie (which I thought was pretty forgettable anyway).

Great Job Sir Basil! This was one of my favorite shows and the follow up shows of Rod Serling, he was a great writer and presenter of his work.

Rod Serling is one of my favorite writers....and whenever I see him on "The Twilight Zone," I want to rip that cigarette out of his hand and say, "Nooooo, Rod, don't do that!" We lost him way too soon. That talent, that voice, that signpost up ahead....

Sir Basil Birchbottom (25 months ago | reply)
Thanks, CLHARBAUGHBAYIMAGES--glad you liked it, hope it brougt back many fond memories. I know I recall my favorite episodes while drawing it.
We did indeed lose him too soon, froggy, but would he have been Rod Serling without the cigarette? On the other hand, not only might he have around longer without it, but there might well be many fewer smokers among our generation if we hadn't thought he looked so cool smoking one. Of course, I say "we" in the general sense. He didn't influence me to smoke cigarettes. I followed the lead of his brother Robert, Bing Crosby, Fred MacMurray as Steve Douglas, Hugh Hefner and the other suave and sophisticated fellows and smoke a pipe.

Hi Sir Basil ..... this drawing is Fabulous! It would make a great cover for a DVD set. I like the way the road bends so that you don't know what other bizarre sights lay ahead! A memorable episode for me was ' A Penny For Your Thoughts ' where a bank employee ( Dick York) could read people's minds after a coin he dropped landed on it's side. To this day I keep hoping that something magical will happen if a coin I drop should land on it's edge. I don't really want to be able to read minds though, I'd rather be granted 3 wishes or hit the lotto jackpot. Bravo Sir Bas .... this is great stuff!

Thanks, Sunset--your flattering comments always appreciated! My favorite part of doing this was the sign--I guess it was my experience in the military and my entire working life spent dealing with government regulations that makes having a signpost to tell you there's a signpost ahead seem incredibly funny. Whatever your wish, I hope that coin lands on its edge for you!

Dear Sir Basil- You know, this would make a great Xmas card....or perhaps a greeting for the Lunar Eclispe/Winter Solstice. Since you didn't have anything particular posted for the holiday season, I'm designating this one! Have a Way-Out holiday-of-your-choice and New Year!
xxx froggy

Thanks, Froggy! I'm afraid I was a bad little boy and didn't get anything done for Christmas this year, and, like you say, this one can be it, especially seeing as how Rod was born on Xmas day. It's at least as Christmas-y (in my crochety old Scrooge opinion) as, say, the dogs barking "Jingle Bells". And, she might as well have been at the manger, I guess--I'm still wondering where that Little Drummer Boy came from, so who's to say she wasn't his babysitter...?

Great image of a one-eyed hitchhiker.
In that era, we were all warned not to pick up hitchhikers.....

Yes, but as we all know, warnings are for wimps (even if Trix like this one AREN'T for kids!)
