Babylegs - Step 4

Newer Older

Zigzag stitch the long edge shut. Leave the short ends un-hemmed.

At this point you should have a small rectangle tube with wrong side facing out. Go ahead and fold down one edge of the tube that will form the cuff so that the "right" side of the fabric is now out and the two remaining raw edges are together.

Just wanted to add this for newbies: make sure you are sewing right sides together!!

I am struggling here. I have striped socks..stripes run around and around socks.. I have the foot part cut. Do I sew that part right sides together so the stripes run the same way as the strips on the socks? If I sew the "tube" right sides together, when I turn it right sides out, the "raw edges" are inside the tube. What am I missing?
I have another quesiton, but I'll wait hopefully, for a response to this one.

Getting past this part stumped me for a LONG time, I finally realized the seamed edge was not supposed to be the horizontal seam of the cuff, but the vertical seam. You have to fold the long tube halfway up, so the two unfinished edges meet and it will look like the cuff of a sweatshirt with the pattern running the same way as the long part of the sock. I kept assuming the "three unfinished edges" were the edges of the small cuff we just zig zagged, and the main body of the sock. I almost feel there should be one more step in between here and the sewing of the three edges showing how to fold the cuff for the village dunce like me :)

Just finished my first pair and am working on my second, so don't give up, if you are getting stuck it will eventually just click.

ahhhh! Sumnerrain helped to make sense! the sweatshirt analogy helped me understand - I thought that it was just a little fold but I realize that it means to fold it in half right side out. a picture might be good here...
