Ship's Prime Mover
Here is one for the engineering buffs out there. This is one of four prime movers in the machinery space aboard a diesel-electric ship I worked on a few years ago. I guess it could be described as a diesel generator. The power produced then is supplied to electric drive motors. In simple terms, a prime mover is a machine or engine that converts energy from an energy source into mechanical energy (e.g. shaft power). In this photo, the prime mover is an eight-cylinder MaK 8M32C main diesel engine. MaK marine diesel manufacturing is now owned by Caterpillar. The generator is that large grey box attached to the other end of the diesel. This particular setup produces about 4 MW. One MW can power approximately 650 residential homes.
