The Meanings of Reflection
Undercut by shadows
you no longer see
my hand in front of your face
and our dreams gather
in a taunt that echoes against
the cold mute shore. Above, the silver
from so many extinguished stars
gleam as if they were the source,
not mere reflection --
the way
we go over and over it
looking for another conclusion.
To stagger to one’s feet is a strategy
against loss. So we drag hope behind us
into the starkest of futures.
Light is a non-essential there: we see now
it could not have been otherwise.
