Indy: 19th March 1998 to 19th December 2011
The Pain now is the Happiness then. Indy passed away gently at 11 am Monday morning. He felt no pain and fear and I was with him at the end gazing gently into his beautiful eyes and telling him I loved him as the vet helped him on his way. Thank you all for every single comment, they have given me the strength to get through it on Monday. Now comes the hardest part, living without him.

Dear Mike.. I know how hard these past months, weeks and days have been for you. Please take comfort in knowing Indy lead a magnificent life.. If only all dogs, especially Border Collies could be so fortunate. It is a shock having our beloved dogs leave for the other side.. They will always be with us in joyous memories. I think life does it this way so we love each other all the more while we are here on Earth. My thoughts and prayers will always be with you dear friend. Much love to you, Mike. ~Toni

Last November 2010, I had to do the same with my little corgi, Peanut. My flickr friends were so supportive and kind and it gave me great comfort knowing many had been through the same thing and really knew thepain I was in. One sent me this poem, and I have read it often and cried over it but it was very comforting to know his spirit will always be near...........I hope it helps you too............hugs!
I Stood Beside Your Bed Last Night
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear.
"Its me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I want to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for the key,
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me".
You looked so very tired and then you sank into a chair,
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.
Its possible for me to be so near you everyday,
to say to you with certainty "I never went away".
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew
That in the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.
The day is over.... I smile and watch you yawning
and say, " Good Night, Sweet Dreams, God Bless,
I'll see you in the morning".
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide
I'll rush to greet you and well stand together side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there's much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out; then come home and be with me.

There's some, albeit bitter, comfort in the thought that the loss is one-sided. He never experienced being away from you. In a world full of heartbroken throwaway dogs, he was one lucky soul.
I thought of him (and you) a lot today. So glad to hear he went peacefully.

Oh Mike. You both have been on my mind since I've gotten up. I'm filled with sadness as I write this but Indy is at rest now. He will have fun romping and playing with all the other animals across The Rainbow Bridge. R.I.P Indy, you will be greatly missed. He made my time on flickr that much brighter each time I saw his wonderful, sweet old face. Focus and I send our love.

I type through tears.
I feel your pain and loss,
I'm glad you were holding Indy, making him feel safe and loved,
what a lucky dog he was, to have been blessed with someone like you.
What a beautiful pic of him, smiling with his ball, as he overlooks your beautiful countryside.
Keeping you close in thought and prayer.
He will be forever in your heart, and ours.

OMG this is the saddest news ever! Esp around the holidays. I am truly so sad for you Mike. You have been such a lovely friend on here and I have enjoyed seeing Indy via your photos. He was such a wonderful dog and he got to experience the world so free, unlike many animals. I know he had a great owner and a great life. I wish there was something I could do or say to help but I know what its like to lose a pet and there isn't much because nothing can fill that hole in your heart. The boys and I send your love and thoughts and cyber hug and puppy kisses though. Rest in peace, beautiful Indy, we love you

So sorry Mike. Indy had a great life with you - a life so many dogs never get to experience - although you'll feel so empty now it won't be long before to you start to have a little smile at wonderful memories. I'm sure Scamp was there today to greet his old pal, ball at the ready. No more pain or illness now - just peace. RIP Indy. X

been thinking about you and Indy all weekend, and today I sent so many special thougths to both of you while working. I spoke about you to Briciola and Poldo telling them that all dogs should be so lucky to meet someone like you to take care of them. As you wrote, now comes the difficult part, being without him. But he will be forever in your spirit, they teach so much to us while we think the contrary. He has stopped suffering, and I am sure that Black, Nerina, Macchietta and Grey welcomed him and they all are together happily going anywhere they please. A big hug from all of us.

being without our four-legged soul mates is always so hard, their lives are never long enough and when we lose one before their time we carry that gulf within our hearts always - but in some way they live on with us, through all that has been shared.. walk gently with your grief knowing that many other hearts carry similar pain and are also held together by those joy-filled memories of brighter days
the words below were not specifically written with canine soul mates in mind, but I hope they may speak gently to you at this dark time
On the death of the Beloved
Though we need to weep your loss,
You dwell in that safe place in our hearts,
Where no storm or night or pain can reach you.
Your love was like the dawn
Brightening over our lives
Awakening beneath the dark
A further adventure of colour.
The sound of your voice
Found for us
A new music
That brightened everything.
Whatever you enfolded in your gaze
Quickened in the joy of its being;
You placed smiles like flowers
On the altar of the heart.
Your mind always sparkled
With wonder at things.
Though your days here were brief,
Your spirit was live, awake, complete.
We look towards each other no longer
From the old distance of our names;
Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath,
As close to us as we are to ourselves.
Though we cannot see you with outward eyes,
We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything
To which we bring our best refinement.
Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.
When orchids brighten the earth,
Darkest winter has turned to spring;
May this dark grief flower with hope
In every heart that loves you.
May you continue to inspire us:
To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again.
