I had a similar problem with my old Pismo powerbook. I took a Sharpee to it, rather than do much else. I'd consider replacing this unit, though, as it's a day old. I didn't see this problem on my Pismo for over a year.

I've had my Pismo for 6 years and no paint has ever scratched off. Just sayin...

I guess it's the matte coating which is falling of? :(
The white one is glossy isn't it? So I guess it's the same plastic with different colors + coating on the black one?

Its clearly a photo of a dealership demo model . Who knows what its "suffered" along the way while everyone in the store, staff and customers alike, tries it out!

Right where the backing of the display meets the bezel.

I bet it's similar to the crappy rubber coating that is on all the VW knobs and door handles. It's the same color underneath, but flakes off with regular use. Looks like we'll be hearing from angry owners in no time (just like with every other apple product it seems, i.e. nano screen scratches)

This might be the same coating that the first Canon Digital Rebel had around the black parts of the camera. Give a nice silky feeling, but it peels off after a year or so. At any rate, I'll just be super careful no matter what it's made out of.

Guys, get real. All of the fuss about this relates to one demo machine, at one dealer! You can trace every report I've seen so far about this issue back to this one machine.

Contrary to the stories doing the rounds, the black MacBook is NOT painted, its black polycarbonate, and it is quite possible that this particular one may have suffered impact, or chemical, damage of some kind.

I see that the original poster has posted a clarification at marklem.com/mlem/?p=12

I'm on my fourth Macbook (first one was replaced due to flaking, second one had a stuck left arrow key, and third one had screen issues). The finish on this one has also started to flake off.
