The challenge here was to incorporate icons that were contemporary—many existing icons depicted outdated technology (e.g., bulky cellphones)—and that reflected the principal areas of securities research. I asked illustrator Mark Andresen to create symbols for alternative energy, information technology, communication, housing, travel, construction, and clothing.

After choosing Brothers as a suitably Western typeface, I was happy to discover its cool little glyphs—the headline wouldn't have been nearly as effective without the "the" glyph.

A fun layout for an article that had a touch of humor, despite the weightiness of the topic. I like how the "C" in "Crisis" reflects the circle, and feel that the typeface (Rockwell) combined with the round shape suggests a life preserver.

The author, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, wrote to me: "When I saw your title for my piece, “Portfolio Theory under Pressure” I feared you screwed things up. But when I read beyond the frightening headlines—which were my words, word for word—I found that the article was just as I wrote it. [The] drawing of sharks circling the portfolio theorist, and your bold presentation of my three assertions, were stokes of genius!"
