Layar app for iPhone showing Wikipedia entries located nearby
Layar is a free application on your mobile phone which shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of reality through the camera of your mobile phone. The technology is called Augmented Reality. It uses the GPS, accelerometer and digital compass to know where you are and in which direction you are facing - it sources places of interest fro Wikipedia, Flickr, Yelp, etc. Really great potential but some of these sources still lack geolocation data for Cape Town and Flickr is only showing very recently taken photos.

amazing - if this is how the app STARTS can you imagine where it will be in a couple months time. Also, with google now featuring SA in maps it won't be long before this is overloaded with great content

Yes quite true! Boggles my mind what will happen with digital compasses, GPS, accelerometers etc. The power though is to let 3rd party developers use their imagination. BTW some of your photos did show up on this app!

good to know the many hours spent placing all my images on a map is paying off!

You mean you are not using the latest Picasa with integrated place tagging and face recognition....... ;-)

I used Picasa ages ago when I was on a PC - can't imagine moving to it tho, I'm sure Flickr will catch up?

No using Picasa program for editing on the computer itself, then upload to Flickr. Nothing beats Flickr yet for the hosting side.

glad to hear it! I use Aperture for quick photo editing and organising.. don't think it has the face recognition yet, altho iPhoto has had it for a while now. I've noticed that you can tag people in Flickr now, as well.. just a matter of time before Flickr will have face recognition online? Imagine tagging one picture and then it finds the rest for you? hmmm.
