I am not a processor, I am a random process

    I'll often get comments on my film photos, "nice processing". Actually, I don't do anything to my film shots except crop.

    So the visual effect above is not created by me in some fit of artistic inspiration in Photoshop... as if!

    Rather I apply a process that increases the "design space" of the image through a process that at every step introduces random change:

    * use a cheap camera whose lenses and focus are imperfect
    * use expensive film that super-saturates
    * process the film in the wrong chemicals
    * don't look at what you're shooting
    * shoot out moving car
    * put exposure on manual, which results in a random exposure time

    Each element of randomness increases the number of things the picture might become. I just can't tell ahead of time where it might end up.

      I like your approach (and I never thought you additionally processing your film images). But I am curious how many usable images you usually get from one roll? Because using expensive film can get...ugh...expensive. Especially if a lot of shots are spoiled. I am still deciding if I should try film again. :-)

      Interesting shot... nice processing! (Ha!) I liked what you wrote.. and concur with your conclusions. I tend not to experiment too much and I think that your shooting gets boring if you don't do enough of that. Also it's the best way to learn! Thanks for the shot and the note... nicely done!

      Whatever it is you do, the result here is just phenomenal. I enjoyed a car ride across the Po Delta recently and tried the 'out of the car window' technique and loved the results!

      I got a kick out of reading all about the process. Pretty cool. Certainly there is nothing about following the rules in your photography. Its sure fun to follow what you do and wait to see what the process produces. The tones here are fabulous!
