The past few days have been busy and made up of snapshots. I'm ok with that.

Fifty six.

The Iditarod started on the 3rd this year in downtown Anchorage, (with the restart following in Willow).
This team of dogs was all snow white, and every one of them was talking and bouncing in place eager to start the race. All of them except the two lead dogs who just stood cooly up front, waiting for their turn to guide all the other hooligans to the starting line. It's amazing the relationship you see some of the mushers have with their teams. These people love their dogs, and their dogs love to run.
Over the next two weeks these teams will be taking a 1,049 mile trek through Alaskan wilderness all the way to Nome. It's a race commemorating the 1925 serum run to Nome, when mushers relayed a package of diphtheria antitoxin to the town in the dead of winter. Ever heard of Balto or Togo? Long before that time sled teams were used to deliver mail, transport goods and mining equipment, and firewood, as well as for transportation.

And there's a little history lesson for you.
