• I built this desk specifically for this space two years ago. What's not shown is a large column that runs *through* the desk at about the top left of the "desk calendar". It's about a foot in diameter. I cut a U out of the back of the desk to accomodate it.
  • 2x2 cube bookcase, pine
  • 2x2 cube bookcase, pine
  • 2x2 cube bookcase, pine
  • Dresser I really don't need that fits the space perfectly.
  • This is the white brick wall. It's very cool looking but also incredibly dirty... little pieces of crud falling down all the time. Can't put the piano there (also baseboard heating is on this side).
  • This is the little storage nook that is open right now. It's pretty ugly. There are pipes and things running vertically... and I have some piled up boxes. It's more or less my outbox.
  • Here are two wicker file boxes filled with photographs. I'd like to transfer the files from the file cabinets into these (and find a third) and put them in the storage nook... but then where will the photos go?
  • The bed is a simple pine platform. The windowsill of the giant loft windows behind my bed serves as a really great bedside table.
  • Giant windows to the street. Good light! Bad noise! (I'm on the ground floor, near the BQE)
  • There is a wall here. If I could fill this in black, I would. This is inaccessible.
  • There's currently a bunch of stuff here too that I didn't indicate. A lovely TV stand with vintage wooden boxes on top and beneath, as well as a pile of assorted cardboard boxes to the left of it (yep, I really need to go through those).
  • This is probably the only spot for the piano that would work.
  • There's a white pillar, about 10" in diameter, right here.

OK... here is my current room. Look at the notes for details.

My main issues are that I don't have space for anyone else to sit... and so much space is taken up by my (beautiful handbuilt-by-me) desk when I now have a separate workspace in Manhattan. And I don't really have a place for writing music.

The big change that will happen is that my piano will most likely go into this room. But that's probably for another room plan.

Do I need to build a loft? Thoughts?

I just went through all your pics, trying to get a general idea of what you want. I am thinking if you get the loft bed, keep the sheers on your windows. Get sheers to hang as 'walls' for your bed area, if you want to separate it, and put your living room underneath. It will give you more room, and let you entertain without having to make your bed :)

In the nook, borrow a ladder. Hang floor-to-ceiling sheers (pale green or blue?), put shelves in there, and perhaps put a small lamp on the floor inside to up-light it just to look nice. But all that storage in there should help with the other stacks, yes?

I really like all the light in your room, which is why I keep saying to use sheer curtains.

For the rest, I'm going to keep thinking. Brain just called for more coffee....

I'd be careful about adding too much curtain to this room, though. "Surround it with sheers!" can't be your main stuff-hiding fix, especially considering the sorta-industrial look of your space. Though it's a good idea for the loft bed.

The big question surrounding a loft is where would it go? If you had to put it against the windows, I wouldn't do it.

hey, thanks to both of you for taking a look. i'm feeling a little demoralized. i feel like there's just not room for me to have the room i want in here, and i don't know what to leave out.

opo, see my post at www.flickr.com/photos/12654713@N05/1389175435 / about loft and light. i'd be curious to hear your response.

although the loft seems like the only way to have enough space, i'm wary of losing light, which is the best thing about the room. i actually like the beads in charlie brown's loft (link above).

i like the idea of adding shelves to that little storage nook, although i'm not sure how they would fit as there are a bunch of pipes over to the left that make it difficult to put in any normal shelves. i probably only have about 14" in width to work with. but maybe i could find some kind of narrow ikea shelf? i could also just stack boxes there. as long as they are matching boxes (for instance maybe my wicker file boxes) i think it would be okay.

i do need to be very careful about overcommitting on both the money and time front. i am spending the year finishing my doctoral dissertation and certainly don't need to add any major projects to my plate. i just want a room that i like to hang out in until i can afford my own apartment.
