buddha surrounded by revelers. there were many buddhist tales illustrated on the sides of borobudur-- part of its beauty-- many of which were about the buddha attempting to achieve enlightenment.

orchids from the singapore orchid gardens, which we visited at the start of our trip.

These children, wearing batik head coverings and sarongs, were behind the puppet show at the Kraton, the Sultan's palace in Yogyakarta. A full gamelan orchestra is just behind them. Note the toy (I hope!) swords stuck in their belts, just like the older men wore. You can see the puppeteer behind them, moving a puppet along behind the screen. To the left and right are many other puppets, who make a sort of scrim of garish faces to look at while you watch the main action. In sepia because the light flushed through this shot so brightly.

I loved the myriad colors hidden in the detail work at Borobudur, which dates back to the 8th or 9th century A.D. I think I remember noticing that the black hue here is actually from water trickling down over the figure on the left.
