It was the first ever Kirkcaldy leg of the Halford's Tour Series criterium racing today. I'm very much a novice sports photographer, but I was in the right spot at the right time to capture this spectacular crash. Hopefully the young rider in the junior B race (under 14's wasn't too badly hurt, because he re-mounted his bike and cycled after the rest? The amusing thing was that this happened right outside the offices of the Fife Free Press, our local newspaper and the newspaper's photographer, who had been photographing beside me, had just gone back into his office to answer a phone query? You just couldn't make that up could you? He missed a second but slightly less spectacular crash five minutes later. :0)
My crash photo was included in a lot of other photos in the Fife Free Press and accredited to me. The Dundee Courier published a larger photo of my crash on its own, the day after their main photos, but never mentioned my name. Tut! Tut! An interesting free photo and no recognition of its author? :0((
By the way this is Grant Martin of Dundee Discovery Juniors. It turned out that his older brother Fraser Martin of Perth United Juniors also crashed at the same spot shortly afterwards and their parents have now got high resolution photos of both crashes. Both boys are cycling-mad and their mother said 'our sons do seem to have an affinity for crash barriers" which I thought was so funny!
STOP PRESS. Great respect to Grant, because after he remounted his sturdy bike, he eventually finished 3rd out of 11 finishers in the under 14's race???? Grant's parents emailed me that the pro riders in the race have been praising the photo on Twitter. Oh my head will be getting big? LOL!
