89 Longton Empire 2

Converted to a cinema in 1922, which lasted until 1966, the Empire Longton was then converted to a bingo hall, however little structural changes had been made to Matcham's original design. The greatest alteration was the insertion of a false ceiling above the dress circle, shutting off the upper circle and balcony. This area was left, seated and intact, with the beautiful ceiling painted over black. There were original painted scenes by Binn's of Halifax in the four oval panels.
