Blood Moon

So, I didn't stay up all night photographing the eclipse this time, but now I wish I had with the increased resolution of the 5D MK II. Since I don't have any new images I'll share this shot of the moon in total eclipse I took on Aug 28, 2007. The star field was added from a different image to add depth and context.

My most popular image from the 2007 lunar event, "Lunar Eclipse Over Mt. Shasta", can be seen in my photostream. It was part of an exhibit in the Smithsonian.

It seems a bit like cheating (star field from somewhere else), but the end result is awesome!

Amazing your site and photo! Great work...Thank you for the inspiration!!!

    5. Sean Bagshaw (18 months ago | reply)

pdxsafariguy - Thanks. I can see why you might have that reaction. For me it's only cheating if you're breaking a rule, and I'm more interested in creating compelling images than adhering to a set of rules (whose rules anyway?). I'm always glad to discuss my process and not hide anything. Further, the moon it too bright to capture a good star field shot simultaneously, so this is a workaround for the limitations of photography.

Cool composition. I really like the stars as the background, makes it look so much more interesting. I did stay up last night to photography the eclipse. It was cold and cloudy here in San Francisco bay, but luckily there were moments of clear sky. Check out my photo stream if you get a chance.

    7. pdxsafariguy (18 months ago | reply)

Oh I agree. I myself go for what looks best, and the moon is so bright you'd never get stars with it. The stars make this stand out from the 10 other shots I have seen my other contacts post of lunar eclipses. I'm just giving a hard time!

All good. Hard time or serious critique I always appreciate hearing others perspectives. I always hope my images will create thought and dialog.

love how you added the stars in there. that is the best thing about photography being creative

      Hi Sean.

      Nice composite. Striking image.

I was out last night trying to get a shot through and between cloud cover here near Mount Hood. It was hard to focus on it and then the thin cloud cover softened the focus that I was able to achieve... but I got one. : )

      Nice work!

Way to be dedicated Gary. Glad you got a shot. Do you have it posted?

Incredible shot. Really makes me wish it hadn't been cloudy here so I could have had a glimpse at it.

Not really that I am super jealous of this shot, but this is really fantastic work. Clouds ruined mine.
