Grandmother Prays "in preparation" (left this world in January 2009) - Phimai, Thailand

Newer Older

I am reposting this image. Grandmother died a couple of weeks ago. She was sitting praying, and then just fell asleep...forever...

The house I was invited to in Pimai belongs to Lung's family. This is the great grandmother. She spends her days inside a bamboo construction, open but shaded by a roof; praying .

She still has moments of lucidity but most of her time is spent in prayer, or, "in preparation". I was told she prays constantly, never doing anything else except occasional food and drink and, often stopping only when she falls asleep. As soon as she awakes she begins praying again. It could be argued her continuous prayer is a kind of lucidity...

When I first went to her she started praying intensely, so much so I lowered the camera and stayed with her about ten minutes, also praying with her. After that we both stopped and she seemed to size me up.

Then she relaxed, leaned forward and prayed again.....softly.

I took a photo...

Fantastic portrait and lovely story. I love your black and white images of the real Thailand.
I am thinking of going to Yasothon for the rocket festival in May but am worried about political instability which prevented me from going last year. What do you think ?

Again many thanks to friends and visitors for stopping by. Currently in the Emerald Triangle I rarely have a good internet connection and so am more brief and inactive.

FOTOGRAFM: there should be no problems at all now especially in that part of the country. Even in Krungthep as a visitor last year there would have been little danger unless you were in the thick of it due to choice or lack of information.

Sadly it is not the country as tourists imagine it to be any longer, if ever it was. Visiting the north and north-east is something only 2% of all foreign visitors to Thailand do. It is unfortunate because it is better to see the real country and the real people from all walks of life and not just what the travel agents want you to see and talk about back home.

    Have a great trip...
