Thanks! 1.6s did the trick. I tried not to blow out the details on the dome.

nice shot! I like the blowing U.S. flag... and good job on getting the dome details (like you said).

it's too bad the dome is so brightly lit compared to the rest of the capitol. I'm tempted to use a graduated ND filter, or perhaps just do two different exposures, one for the dome, and one for the rest.

Apoc – graduated ND filter…you lost me there. I’ll have to google that one. I assume it must help dim down brightly lit areas?

I was thinking about blending exposures, but thought the flags would come out looking a little wild (although some may like that effect).

      Thanks for the suggestions!

Nice shot and the dome is well exposed despite the dark sky. Better to get the exposure right than blending exposures in my opinion. For optimum exposure take the shot during the blue hour. Nice work and nice sharpness too.

      look for "nd grad."

I guess this being flickr, a picture says a thousand words, right?

Awesome link! So, do you just hold that filter over your lens by hand or is there a way to attach it to your camera?!? I see there are screw on types, but the info I found on the internet didn’t recommend them.

There's a filter system that uses those big square ones, and you basically have an attachment that covers th front of the lens to hold it in place. Or you could hold it there yourself I suppose. I believe Castle photo had an old stock system in their bargain bin last time I checked. I think it's made by Hoya?

As far as the shot is concerned, I think you're right about the flags. This exposure here is probably the best possible for the situation, so right on!
