"anna jane", first sail

ghetto roof racks nervous a bit getting ready getting ready rowing out figuring out the oars rowing out "anna jane", first sail "anna jane", first sail "anna jane", first sail got shallow, pulled the leeboard up, but still buried the rudder stripped down to just row

First time out in the EP. Sailed downwind OK in what little wind there was. To windward, not so much. I need to fiddle with things a bit. But it rowed very nicely and the thole pin setup was not very hard to get the hang of. My only real problem occurred when I lodged the rudder in some mud and the wind leveraged it to where I had a difficult time pulling it free. I also need to make collars for the oars. They had some wearing of the paint, already.

When i got back an older gent stopped me and asked me all about it - what it was made of, how it rowed, the pins instead of oarlocks, about the rocker, etc.

I named the boat after my grandmother. She went by Anne, but her given name was Anna Jane. I spent a lot of time on Missouri lakes with her as a child.

Great job on the build. Inspiring for a would be first time builder! As for the Wa'apa, is that going to be your next build? I hope to start on the "weekend skiff" in a couple weeks, but have plans and Gary's book to build the Wa'apa. Great model by the way...

thanks!

as for a first time builder, it's not easy, but not as hard as you'd think. just think simple for your first build. that's what i did, i spent months poring over books, photos and plans online before settling on the EP.

my next boat will likely be a simple canoe/pirogue design. something i can take on a river and beat to death. maybe even an old-style river jonboat. i do plan to build the wa'apa at some point. but that will have a bit more commitment, time-wise and in resources than i currently have to devote. i'd also likely build it as a tacker, instead of a shunter like the model.

also, i've got the book on the weekend skiff. it looks like an interesting and fun build. i'm getting ready to mail it to my cousin in florida, he's looking to build an inexpensive skiff or sharpie sometime soon.

good luck with your build, keep me posted!
