Facing HIV/AIDS exhibit
(Best viewed by clicking on "ALL SIZES" above.)
The people portrayed in this exhibit call Northeast Indiana home. They
are
brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, co-workers, friends and
neighbors. Many don’t know each other. They are regular people from
very different backgrounds.
The only similarity among them is that each is living with HIV/AIDS. They stepped forward to be photographed — and spoke up to be quoted — to connect with you in a personal way. They wanted to show that there is no uniform look to HIV/AIDS. Their diversity represents the diversity of the disease.
Facing HIV/AIDS, inspired by other exhibits like it in various regions of the country, was produced by the AIDS Task Force of Northeast Indiana and its AIDS Walk Steering Committee. Sue Nation and Jack Steele provided direction and narrative collection; John Gevers and Gregory Fryzel of NEW MEDIA BREW, Inc. donated the photography and design. Production costs were underwritten by donors, including Dar Richardson and Don Wood, James Rogers, Margy and John Feighner, and an anonymous donor.
Thank you for experiencing these portraits of courage.

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! I am so touched by all the photographs and stories. Our family, especially my mother, has lost very close friends to AIDS. My husband and I became very close with a neighbor who is HIV+. I remember inviting him over to our house for dinner and he was surprised at the invitation after he had informed us of his condition. Thank you so much for the exhibit.

Your photography is, well, miraculous. Few people have both the technical talent and the imagination to look through a lens and see something special, when another person would see just an image to print. Congrats. The AIDS Task Force is blessed to have you visualizing its mission.

I'm sure that your subjects appreciated your sensitivity during your work together as they prepared to make a very big public statement about themselves. I was glad to be able to read the narratives and learn a little more about what each had done to bring himself or herself to the point of taking the photograph.

WOW. This exhibit is amazing. I looked at it last night and had to wait until today to comment because I couldn't focus on words. It's just so moving to read everything these people have to say, and to see their stories. What you did is amazing. I can't imagine how much this inspiration means to someone going through these things, because it is very inspiring even to me. The fact that these people can live how they do with something so hard to deal with, it really puts life in perspective. It really makes you wanna enjoy it and not wait until you have a disease that makes you aware of how precious it is. I'm dissapointed I didn't get to see it in person, but the message is still conveyed on the website. Everyone involved did an amazing job. Each photo is not only beautiful, but each a perfect fit for the person and situation.

I am truly moved by this incredible exhibit. Telling people's stories, letting "the world" see the faces of those it doesn't understand or is afraid of, is liberating for everyone. You have such a gift. You truly SEE people. You see their hearts and souls and then you show who they are in your work. Wow! We are blessed to be able to learn through your talents.

This exhibit is very interesting and impressive. I have been very moved by it. It is not the pictures really that are moving, although their quality makes the voices more real, it is more the contents that have stirred my feelings. I find these people's comments most important for a French person like me who has had almost no contact with the disease, except for some school presentations and warnings. Being a European (apparently more protected than some American person? but maybe I am wrong there) woman, mother and teacher, I find it important to know that the danger is lurking out there for myself or the people I love, but that it can also be (almost) avoided by the constant use of condoms. Here in France it is not a problem to speak about it. My two sons and my step-daughter know about the danger and the ways of avoiding it. Aids should in no way turn into a fear of the act of love, on the contrary, it should turn into a real concern for the others as well as for oneself. I am very impressed by the way all these people are courageously facing their "enemy" - as it is the way they all seem to call the disease, "fighting" it every second of their lives. I believe it is everybody's enemy. But probably the worst enemy in all this is the way HIV/AIDS is seen, as a shame. Things are evolving and fewer and fewer people are considering it as shameful. 20 or 30 years ago, cancer was taboo. In ten or twenty years another disease may become one. It is important to keep our eyes and souls open for those struck by ill fate, disease or life's toll. Anything can happen to my dearest friends, relatives, children, husband or even myself, and I'd feel so happy if people would still see me as I am and not as what I no longer am. Negations too often rhyme with prejudices.

This exhibit is absolutely wonderful and the pictures are so interesting. Very touching. Such a wide variety of people . . . its hard to believe anyone could stereotype a person with HIV after seeing this. I'm sure your work is going to influence, touch, and teach many people in a very powerful and positive way. I'm sure it would be a huge hit here in Bloomington — the atmosphere and people are so open and supportive.

Your portrayal of people living with HIV is touching and real. The diversity of backgrounds, the emotions and faces of people living with this terrible disease is beautiful and inspiring. The space where the exhibit hung has had some conflict over the years because photos and paintings have often been only of old white men, and with the the growing diversity of the school, it was great to have an exhibit more modern. An exhibit that reflects the concerns of our age, not just tributes to the past. Thank you.

I walked this display with my 7-year-old son and all he could say was, "Look Mommy, pictures are everywhere and we can read the words!" Innocent, huh? I then took this time to explain the disease. He told me that the "people on the walls can just take medicine and get better." Too bad there's more to it than that. Never in my lifetime (and I'm only 33) did I think that there would be a disease that:
a) Drug companies make more money pacifying than curing,
b) Carries a stigma from the 70's still,
c) Scares the hell out of anyone who comes into contact with.
Good luck in this fight, it's been a long one.

I can't say I know how they feel. I am not an AIDS -- sorry I don't have AIDS. You kind of have to be in the person's shoes to really get the whole picture. But I do think everyone should live life to its fullest no matter what the case. To see these people living their lives and not giving up kind of makes me sad, not for them but for all those people who are absolutely healthy and do nothing but waste their lives. I commend you people for your bravery and wish the rest of the world would learn from your example. Love always,
